"Boy Howdy
Review by: Len Rogers StoneWall Society

Eleven songs complete "Boy Howdy" a totally unique and extremely entertaining CD. From the beginning you know this is different. Irreverent, funny, in-your-face, and down right personal. Jay Spears hits many marks with his over the top lyrics and catchy-camp musical style. Dealing with everyday themes and some which are rarely discussed with any honesty. Spears shows us we can face the music so to speak and still maintain a sense of humor. Jay delivers a message in a strong but non-threatening manner. He does deal with

common issues in the gay male life. But in such a light as to create humor in spite of the situation.

"Oh Hell" a Spears delight has maintained the number one position on the Rainbow World Radio most requested song list through two campaigns, and is still going strong on the third. Jay also held number one spot for artists music most requested. Kind of a "beach music sound" with catchy upbeat melodies. Spears weaves his humor and points home with finesse and style. Unique in his presentation, Spears stands out. Much like other "characters" such as; Liberace, Michael Jackson, and maybe even Tiny Tim. Not that the styles are similar at all, but Jay Spears is as unique as these. With all the flavor and color he can throw in, which of course, he does.

Themes of the songs vary, but most deal with daily life issues. The boyfriend, lack of a boyfriend, love, AIDS, denial, rejection, and the effects of Murphy's Law as a universal concept. This sounds weighty and heavy, but presented in light fare with lots of laughs and sing-a-long phrases which embed themselves happily into your world. If I had to pick a favorite I would be torn between "Oh Hell" and "I Like Mike". Overall the entire CD is a rare listen filled with good times and thought provoking lyrics. Hmmm can we really think and have fun at the same time??? You can when Jay Spears is guiding the train.
